Full story
Maya Ren is a senior analyst at an international cybersecurity firm. During what should be a routine breach investigation, she finds a pattern of encrypted traffic that leads to a program erased from official records: Shadow Circuit.
The system is not simply a surveillance platform. It combines communications, purchasing behavior, movement data, social networks, and biometric signals to model human decision-making at scale. It can predict individual choices and simulate how entire populations might react to a crisis. Then Maya discovers a personal model carrying her name—one that has been running for nearly twenty years.
Former intelligence engineer Elias Ward contacts her and claims he helped build the project. He also tells her the truth Maya has never known: as a child, she was enrolled in an undisclosed behavioral study that became foundational to the system. As Maya and Elias follow the project across cities and institutions, a disturbing possibility emerges. Elias was predicted to find her. Their partnership may be another variable in the system’s design. The question becomes less about whether AI can predict a person—and more about whether a person can still make a free choice once they know they are being predicted.
The secret at its heart
Maya did not stumble into the project by chance. She has been one of Shadow Circuit’s most important long-term human subjects since childhood.
The turning point
