Full story
Sophie Lane travels to an exclusive island resort for a meticulously planned wedding. The marriage also carries weight for both families, whose businesses are entering a major partnership. On the eve of the ceremony, a storm intensifies beyond forecasts and shuts down transportation and communications across the island.
During evacuation, Sophie comes face to face with Jack Mercer, an emergency-response contractor and the man she once expected to build a life with. Five years earlier, their relationship ended just before an international move. Sophie always believed Jack had chosen his career and simply walked away.
Now the two must cross damaged coastline, mountain roads, and abandoned resort infrastructure to reach safety. The forced proximity finally brings the past into the open. Sophie learns that her family pressured Jack to leave, tying his departure to a career opportunity that changed Sophie’s future.
