What the closed 2026 Runway film call teaches AI storytellers

A historical reference, with its deadline retained

Runway’s 2026 film-track rules set the entry period from 28 January 2026 at 09:00 ET to 27 April 2026 at 16:59:59 ET. The official site now displays winners and event galleries. As checked on 2 October 2026, this is a closed edition, not an available application window. The rules required a 3–15 minute film featuring generated video, while the festival page described a complete, linear narrative.

Prepare a film, not only a collection of clips

Our editorial recommendation is to decide what the film resolves before deciding how many generated shots it contains. A self-contained narrative needs a starting situation, a meaningful change and an ending that makes sense without another episode. A series trailer or a selection of visually impressive tests may serve a different purpose. For future calls, read the relevant category before cutting a submission version, and retain a separate master so edits for a festival do not silently replace the intended series deliverable.

The submission package includes permission

The 2026 terms requested a short explanation of AI techniques and rights sufficient for submission. They also granted the organiser a broad, non-exclusive licence; entering was not merely sending a private viewing link. For any future event, check current eligibility, deadline time zone, presentation format and the precise use rights before uploading. Do not assume next year repeats these rules or that exhibition guarantees distribution, funding or a platform deal.

Prepare a concise synopsis, final runtime, AI workflow note and an organised rights record. Then verify that the viewing link works for the organiser without exposing unrelated private material.
